Western-style shoes arrived in Korea during the late 19th century through Japan, when the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) developed into a modern form of state. More than a century later, it is still difficult to know all the wide varieties of shoes that somehow remain strange because of their names.

Typically, the titles vary depending on the shape of the shoe, and those worn by men and women also have different names according to their style and decoration.

Unlike in the past where men in particular wore their suits in monotonous colors such as black or dark blue, the shoes that used to match the suits have become more colorful and vary in shape.

The biggest contribution on such changes have been corporate culture as more companies become less strict about dress codes. In recent years some companies are even allowing employees to show up to work in their shorts during summer.

Even the material used has moved beyond simple leather.

Still, shoes can pretty much be divided into two categories: dress and casual.

Women’s shoes can be subdivided as there are more elements to them such as the shape and height of the heels and materials that can vary. Some looks like sandals while others like military boots.

Following is a primer on a selection of shoe styles.
